About Despite my best efforts, I always plan visits to New York feeling like Charlie Brown gearing up to kick Lucy's football. Even though all of my trips there have contained at least one emotional disaster and I would most often leave the city feeling swindled, drained, and about two inches tall, this time--this time!--was sure to be different. And then, of course, whump.

I want to not hate New York, I really do--it's the pretty girl at the party, afterall, the one who doesn't need you to like them--and being an artist in New York will always have a certain cachet that being an artist in DC will never have. Still, I wish New York wasn't so proud of itself, as though being difficult and unaffordable were points of pride and not something any reasonable person would flee.
